Falling TVs continue to be a hazard for children

Older, heavier TVs may be being placed on rickety furniture

Furniture Today Staff -- Furniture Today, December 15, 2009

PHILADELPHIA — Studies suggest that the number of children killed or injured by falling TV sets appears to be rising even though consumers are buying lighter flat-panel sets, the Associated Press reports.

The reasons are unclear, but the rising number of accidents could result from people moving their older, heavier televisions to other rooms and placing them on rickety furniture, the AP said.

A study by a team at an Ohio hospital reviewed data from 100 emergency rooms and estimated that 14,700 furniture-related accidents occurred each year between 1990 and 2007, almost half of which were due to TV sets.
