WARREN, Mich. — Art Van Furniture here and Rosa's Home Store in Buffalo, N.Y., have made extra efforts to feed the needy this holiday season.
The first annual Art Van/WXYZ Channel 7 canned food drive at the retailer's 17 metro Detroit stores collected 85,000 pounds of food or the equivalent of 69,000 meals.
"We owe the success of this campaign to the community for pulling together to help the disadvantaged during these tough times," said company Chairman Art Van Elslander. "I am so inspired by and thankful for the employees and customers who donated food to take care of our own Michigan families."
"The drive collected the largest quantity that we have ever received. Normally, we begin to run out of food around Jan. 20 (and) this food will take us through the winter," said Jim Moseley, of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul, which provides, food, clothing and other needs to the poor and underserved in the Detroit area.
In Buffalo, Rosa's hosted an Operation: Rock Out Hunger event at its store Nov. 18-25. With the help of a Bruce Springsteen concert, the event collected nearly $12,000 plus 643 turkeys and 16,186 pounds of other food.
Officials at the Food Bank of Western New York said those donations will help in the distribution of 89,920 meals to those in need.
