U.S. producers collected $27.5 million in antidumping duties in fiscal 2009
Monies represent wood bedroom duties that date back several years
Thomas Russell -- Furniture Today, December 21, 2009
HIGH POINT — A report from U.S. Customs and Border Protection states that domestic producers supporting the antidumping case for Chinese-made wood bedroom furniture collected $27.5 million in duties during fiscal year 2009.
The monies were issued to the companies under the Continued Dumping and Subsidy Offset Act. They represent the disbursement of duties that date back several years, but have not officially liquidated or processed for distribution until this year.
According to the report, the following companies received these specific amounts:
• American of Martinsville: $2,372,967
• Bassett Furniture Inds.: $1,627,614
• Bebe Furniture: $68,150
• Carolina Furniture Works: $698,487
• Century Furniture: $550,350
• Harden Furniture: $129,487
• Higdon Furniture: $586,567
• Johnston Tombigbee Furniture Mfg.: $1,212,427
• Kincaid Furniture: $1,845,064
• L and JG Stickley Inc.: $820,715
• Lea Inds.: $1,166,994
• Michels and Co.: - $476,563

• Tom Seely Furniture: $121,015
• Vaughan-Bassett Furniture Co.: $4,753,318
• Vermont Quality Wood Products: $393,694
The total distributed in 2009 was $27.5 million, compared to $35.8 million in 2008.
These companies supported the government's initial 2004 investigation into the sale of Chinese-made bedrooms. The investigation found that Chinese wood producers were selling goods into the United States at unfair prices.
The resulting duties are assigned to the manufacturers, but paid by their importers of record.
The government also is delaying the disbursement of some $37.6 million in duties available to other manufacturers that were not original petitioners in the original 2004 investigation. The disbursement of these funds will depend on the outcome of litigation involving two unrelated industries.
Companies seeking to receive these funds include Ashley Furniture, Ethan Allen, Kimball, Orleans Furniture, Solid Comfort and Standard Furniture.
