New York Times column lauds Ethan Allen's ability to adapt
Furniture producer, retailer transforms business model
Furniture Today Staff -- Furniture Today, December 22, 2009
NEW YORK — New York Times columnist Thomas Friedman cites Ethan Allen as a prime example of a company transforming the way it does business as a result of ‘The Great Inflection' - the recent mass diffusion of low-cost, high-powered, innovative technologies.
In the column, headlined "The Do-It-Yourself Economy," Friedman discusses the evolution that Ethan Allen has been undergoing in response to The Great Recession. He described the many steps the furniture producer and retailer has taken to cope with changing market conditions, including reducing its work force by 25%, consolidating U.S. manufacturing plants and developing new custom-production approaches for upholstery that team a new Mexican plant with a state-of-the-art facility in North Carolina.
Everywhere he can, CEO Farooq Kathwari told Friedman, he is leveraging technology to cut costs and improve quality.
