Mattress Giant acquires Atlanta, Tampa chains
Deal marks retailer’s entry into Georgia

ADDISON, Texas — Mattress Giant, one of the largest U.S. specialty bedding retailers, has acquired two growing sleep shop chains in the Southeast.
The company, based here, has entered Georgia with its purchase of Mattress Expo, which operates 24 stores and is based in metro Atlanta.
In Florida’s Tampa Bay market, Mattress Giant has expanded its presence with the acquisition of Clearwater Mattress, which operates 21 stores in the market. Mattress Giant has had stores in the Tampa Bay area for 25 years, a milestone it plans to celebrate in the near future.
With the two acquisitions, Mattress Giant grows to more than 340 stores while increasing its presence to 14 states.
"These two strategic growth opportunities are part of our year-long expansion and growth, and these two key markets have tremendous potential for our company," said Barrie Brown, president and CEO of Mattress Giant. "We're pleased to have the Mattress Expo and Clearwater Mattress teams on board and are welcoming them to the Mattress Giant family. We are working to make this a smooth transition for all employees."
Mattress Giant customer service and sales training already has begun in both markets, the company said. "This is a positive step for all three organizations,” Brown said. “It will provide the sales organization with professional growth opportunities and on-going involvement in our award-winning training program."
Clearwater Mattress and Mattress Expo stores will be remodeled to match the in-store formats and shopper experience provided in Mattress Giant locations across the country.
"Our ultimate goal is to create a ‘best-of-both worlds’ experience for our guests. Clearwater Mattress has a strong identity in the (Tampa Bay) market and so does Mattress Giant,” said Brown. "Combining the unique strengths of both will result in an even better experience for consumers."
Mattress Giant has been focusing on sales training and customer service, and in developing what it calls “engaged employees.” The company was named a “Retail Giant of Bedding” last year by Furniture/Today.
In 2006, Mattress Giant had estimated bedding sales of $208 million, up 4.5% from 2005, placing it at No. 7 on Furniture/Today’s list of Top 25 U.S. bedding retailers. It ended 2006 with 250 stores.
