DOC launches 2007 antidumping review

Producer names due by end of month

Thomas Russell -- Furniture Today, January 4, 2008

WASHINGTON — The U.S. Department of Commerce is preparing for the next administrative review in the antidumping case involving Chinese-made wood bedroom furniture.

On Jan. 2, the DOC published a notice asking for interested parties to submit the names of any Chinese wood bedroom furniture producers they believe warrant further review. The review covers shipments during calendar year 2007, and the DOC wants a list of factory names by the end of this month.

This review determines duties on the shipments, which are paid by importers of record, including U.S. furniture wholesalers and retailers.

This is the third administrative review of Chinese made wood bedroom furniture shipments. The first review, which covered shipments between June 2004 and Dec. 31, 2005, was completed this past August.

The second, covering calendar year 2006, is still under way. The DOC plans to release preliminary results of that review in late January and the final results about four months later.

Under the Byrd Amendment, duties collected by the U.S. government until now have been distributed to U.S. manufacturers that supported the original antidumping investigation. Because Congress repealed the amendment, only duties collected through September 2007 will go to the petitioners. Money collected from Oct. 1 and  beyond will go to the federal government.
