R.C. Willey's Child takes office as NHFA president

By Furniture Today Staff -- Furniture Today, January 4, 2010

Jeff Child, president of Salt Lake City-based R.C. Willey Home Furnishings, took office Jan. 1 as 2010 president of the National Home Furnishings Assn.

He succeeds Michael B. Spiller of Spiller Furniture, Tuscaloosa, Ala., who becomes chairman of the executive committee of the home furnishings retailer organization.

Other new officers are Dianne Ray, Garden City Furniture, Garden City Beach, S.C., senior vice president and treasurer; Marc Schewel, Schewel Furniture, Lynchburg, Va., senior vice president; and Cherie Rose, the Rose Collection, Los Gatos, Calif., senior vice president.

New directors are Brian Casey, High Point Market Authority; Bob Maricich, World Market Center, Las Vegas; Thomas H. Olinde, Olinde's Furniture, Baton Rouge, La.; Sherry Sheely, Sheely's Furniture & Appliance, North Lima, Ohio; and John C. Stewart Jr., Big Sandy Super Store, Franklin Furnace, Ohio. They join a group of retailers who are already serving as directors.

Child is a longtime member and leader of NHFA and its West Coast affiliate, the Western Home Furnishings Assn. Jeff helped his father, Sheldon Child, and uncle, Bill Child, with the family business, first working in the R.C. Willey warehouse and later in merchandise display and the carpet department.

After graduating from Brigham Young University, Jeff worked as a sales associate and buyer, eventually becoming president. Since 1995, R.C. Willey has been owned by Warren Buffet's Berkshire Hathaway Inc.

In 2004, Child was selected NHFA's Retailer of the Year in the over $10 million category for his service to the industry and his community and his creative leadership in his company.

He said that as president of NHFA, he wants to strengthen the association's mission to help retailers find ways to profitability, and to provide the services to make that possible. One of those ways is the HomeFurnishings.com Web site, developed by the NHFA to drive business to member retailers.
