Slavins launch domesticupholstery venture
Preferred Furniture will show in High Point this week
By Furniture Today Staff -- Furniture Today, January 11, 2008
SHANNON, Miss. — Industry veteran Howard Slavin and his son Michael have founded Preferred Furniture here as a marketing entity to sell domestically produced upholstery in the $499 to $799 price points.
An earlier story incorrectly said that Bary Alan Leeman also was active in the venture. He is not involved, other than planning to share showroom space with Preferred during the High Point Market.
Howard Slavin said that after developing product in China for the past seven or eight years, he and Michael thought there was an opportunity to get back into domestic production. While there are “obviously pluses and minuses” in sourcing from China, Slavin said Preferred Furniture will deliver product “in less than 30 days and be competitive with China.”
Preferred plans to launch its line at the Tupelo Furniture Market in February and will show in April in High Point at space 100, Center Point on Manning.
A longtime industry executive, Howard Slavin has been president of Wickes, president of the leather division of Lifestyle Enterprise and president of Mississippi-based upholstery maker Kensington Furniture.
