Moosehead assets heading to auction block

By Heath E. Combs -- Furniture Today, January 11, 2010

Case goods producer Moosehead Furniture has ceased operations and its assets will be auctioned off this month, according to an auction company Web site and news reports.

Machias Savings Bank is auctioning the Moosehead assets, according to a listing on the Keenan Auction Co. Web site site. Machias holds the mortgage on the Monson-based company's property, according to documents listed on the site.

Moosehead was the largest employer in Monson with about 22 full-time employees, according to Julie Anderson, town manager.

Anderson said the company struggled to find working capital and shut down in the fall. The city is hoping that a buyer will surface to continue with the business, she said.

“We're trying to think optimistically. We've heard some rumors,” Anderson said.

In early 2007 Moosehead Mfg. announced plans to close. State government officials began trying to find a buyer for the plant, which was saved in September 2007 with the sale to investment group Tardy-Connors LLC, which called the revived company Moosehead Furniture.

The group was made up of Josh Tardy, a lawyer and Republican leader of the Maine House of Representatives, and Dana Connors, who is now with the Maine Chamber of Commerce, among others.

Neither Connors nor Tardy were available for comment.

Moosehead was one of the original petitioners in the antidumping case against Chinese bedroom importers.

Brothers Tolford and John Durham started the business in 1947 and passed it down through two generations.
