RESTON, Va. — E-commerce spending for the 2007 holiday season reached a record $29.2 billion, up 19% from a year earlier, according to comScore.
Helping to drive the increase was a 67% increase in furniture, appliances and equipment, the second-largest growth rate among the top 10 retail categories. The category was not broken down further among furniture, appliances and equipment.
No. 1 was videogames, consoles and accessories, which more than doubled with 129% growth because of popular consoles like Nintendo Wii and Sony PlayStation and games like Halo 3.
Furniture, appliances and equipment finished ahead of event tickets, consumer electronics, apparel, sport and fitness, toys, computer hardware, music and movies, and books and magazines. Event tickets came in a distant third with 24% growth during the holiday season, Nov. 1 through Dec. 31.
The heaviest spending week was the week ending Dec. 16, with $4.7 billion in online sales. The week ending Nov. 18 showed the strongest growth rate (26%) versus the corresponding week in 2006, while the week ending Nov. 4 showed the softest growth (4%).
