Csil releases World Furniture Outlook 2010
By Furniture Today Staff -- Furniture Today, January 11, 2010
MILAN, Italy — The Centre for Industrial Studies here has released its new World Furniture Outlook 2010 report.
For the year, Csil forecasts that the industry in the United States and Canada will grow moderately — at a 1% rate in each country. But “substantial growth” is expected in China, India and Russia — 6%, 6% and 3%, respectively.
The report offers an overview of the world furniture industry with analytical data on furniture production, consumption, imports and exports for 60 countries. Also included are forecasts on world furniture trade and the evolution of demand in 33 European countries, 14 Asian-Pacific countries, seven Middle East and African countries, three North American countries and three South American countries.
Csil pegs world production of furniture at $376 billion. The estimate is based on data from official sources, both national and international, that cover the 60 largest countries. The seven major industrial economies (the United States, Italy, Germany, Japan, France, Canada and the United Kingdom) together produce about $159 billion or about 58% of the world total.
Furniture production in middle and low-income countries accounts for 42% of the world total, according to Csil. In three of these countries — China, Poland and Vietnam — production is increasing rapidly thanks to investment in new plants designed and built for exports. China is the world's leading furniture producer, with a 25% share of the total.
