Bob's Discount Furniture president mocks TV deals
Competitors sell TVs along with furniture
Clint Engel -- Furniture Today, January 14, 2010
BOSTON — Bob's Discount Furniture President Bob Kaufman is using a radio ad to mock the influx of promotions that package televisions with furniture purchases by area retailers, according to a report by the Boston Globe.
But the stores running the promotions and industry analyst Jerry Epperson say they have been successful and are sensible drivers of traffic in this rough economic climate. The story also quotes a consumer recently attracted by the promotion.
Kaufman, of the Manchester, Conn.-based Bob's, takes a jab at Boston competitor's Jordan's Furniture, Cardi's and Bernie & Phyl's with the spot, saying, "If you want pizza, go to a pizza shop. If you want a TV, go to an electronics store. And lo and behold if you want furniture, you should go to a furniture store," the story said.
The offer of big-screen televisions packaged with a furniture purchases, however, appears to be blossoming faster than Bob's can shout it down - not only in Boston, but across the country, with giants such as Rooms To Go and Ashley Furniture HomeStores getting in on the program as well.
