TORONTO — Canadian manufacturer Gus Design Group has begun offering upholstered seating with Forest Stewardship Council-certified wood from responsibly managed forests.
The certification covers wood components of the frames on the Gus Modern in-stock upholstery collection, including both solid and engineered wood used for interior frames and also exterior components like wood block feet and wood bases, with the exception of its Truss Chair.
It unveiled the certification at the High Point Market in October. FSC certification provides internationally recognized standards, trademark assurance and accreditation to companies interested in responsible forestry.
"There's definitely a demand for greener products. Rather than make claims out of nowhere we went down the responsible road for certification. The FSC was the real gold standard, a recognized way to manufacture furniture that has a sustainability component," said Jon Isaak, marketing manager for Gus.
The company began the FSC certification process in 2007, going through a series of audits of its supply chain and through to its finished product. It achieved the certification this year.
Gus has exclusive relationships with its factories in Asia, Isaak said. Few factories there have sought FSC certification and Gus considers itself a leader in the furniture industry for getting the status.
Among its new 100% FSC-certified items introduced at High Point were a modern rocker available in three fabrics, and a sofa and chair with tuxedo-style upholstery frames and wood block feet.
The company is currently working on tags for its upholstered FSC pieces that will have the "100% From Well-Managed Forests" logo, Isaak said.
