Kays takes top NHFA post

Attorney and former retailer Doug Kays of Pacific Palisades, Calif., took office Jan. 1 as 2008 president of National Home Furnishings Assn.

He succeeds Wogan S. Badcock III of W.S. Badcock Corp. in Mulberry, Fla., who moves to the post of chairman of the executive committee.

Senior vice presidents are Jeff Child, R.C. Willey Home Furnishings, Salt Lake City, and Michael B. Spiller, Spiller Furniture, Tuscaloosa, Ala. Senior vice president and treasurer is Dianne Ray, Garden City Furniture, Garden City Beach, S.C.

New directors are Michael Albert, Pilgrim Furniture, Southington, Conn.; Randy Coconis, Coconis Furniture, South Zanesville, Ohio; David Gunn, Knight Furniture, Sherman, Texas; David Harkness, Harkness Furniture, Tacoma, Wash.; Henry Johnson, Kimbrells, Charlotte, N.C.; Larry Klaben, Morris Home Furnishings, Dayton, Ohio; Dino Luckino, Georgia Backyard, Suwanee, Ga.; John Moray, Gormans, Farmington, Mich.; William Rippner, Compass Furniture, Jefferson, La.; Kirk Simon, A. Simon & Sons, Franklin, Mass.; Josh Tatelman, Jordans Furniture, East Taunton, Mass.; Shari Wagner, Ashley Furniture HomeStore, Arcadia, Wis.; and Gordy Wallenstein, Furniture Outlet USA, Sioux Falls, S.D.

They join a group of retailers who continue to serve as directors of NHFA.

Kays is a longtime member and leader of NHFA and its West Coast affiliate, the Western Home Furnishings Assn.

He worked at retailer McMahan's Furniture in Los Angeles and became its in-house counsel, spending 22 years there and then becoming a senior vice president with Heilig-Meyers. He later opened and operated retailer Premiere Home Furnishings and now focuses on providing legal and real estate services to the home furnishings industry.
