Spaldin debuts foam mattress that consumers can customize
Spanish specialty sleep producer

Las Vegas — LAS VEGAS — Spaldin Sleep Systems, a Spanish specialty sleep producer, is making its debut here with an unusual foam mattress that lets sleepers customize their comfort.
Spaldin's Vitario bed is "a totally innovative and unique concept that will change the sleeping culture," said Larry Craver, director of North American sales for the company.
The HR foam mattress comes with 24 channels that accommodate round foam "stamps" of varying densities. Changing the configuration of the foam stamps changes the feel of the mattress.
Craver said Vitario was developed based on research conducted by an Austrian medical institute. The design enables sleepers to find the ergonomic configuration that is best for their body type, he said.
Vitario is topped with either a latex or visco comfort layer. Air channels in the bed promote air circulation. Stores that sell the bed get a kiosk that helps consumers determine what Vitario configuration is best for them.
Spaldin will show its specialty and adjustable bedding products, many of which tout a green story, in the World Market Center's Pavilion 3, space 30604. Retail prices are in the medium range, the company said.
Introductions include the Aircell soy mattress, made of soybean oil and fibers. Available in all sizes, it comes vacuum- and roll-packed for ease of transportation and warehousing, and to ensure cleanliness of the product. "Our concern for the environment," Craver said, "is equal only to the concern we have for our customers' comfort."
Spaldin is the brand name for Industrias Tobia, a Spanish company with more than 50 years of experience in bedding. Bed bases have been an important part of the company's efforts, and a number of adjustable beds will be shown in Las Vegas.
Among the adjustable beds is the Techno, a bed that uses advanced materials and a horizontal movement unique to adjustable beds, Craver said.
The Gemini portable adjustable bed is another introduction. It is built to fold for ease of storage and transportation.
A metal portable mattress foundation, Descanso, also is being shown. It replaces both the bed frame and bed base. The unit is constructed with beechwood slats, which are flexible and function as a spring.
Both the Gemini and Descanso units can be folded, packed in a box, and shipped via UPS or Federal Express.
"The concept," Craver said, "is that vacuum-packed mattresses and our portable bases save space, time and money."
Spaldin also is showing a full range of pillows in Las Vegas.
The company is warehousing its products in North Carolina. Craver is based in Winston-Salem, N.C.
