Occasional producers offer something for everyone
By Thomas Russell -- Furniture Today, January 27, 2008
Las Vegas — For occasional buyers from around the country, the market here continues to offer a wide assortment of styles suitable to diverse geographic markets and tastes.
Buyers seeking out rustic furniture will find plenty to choose from, including pieces with reclaimed or recycled hardwoods.
For those with slightly more traditional and transitional tastes, the occasional category also will have plenty of colorful hand-painted pieces.
And those seeking to serve a younger, more urban clientele will find plenty in the contemporary realm, thanks to a generous mix of table groups with clean lines and dark finishes.
Falling within the rustic realm is Revco International's Terra collection, which includes cocktail, end and console tables made with recycled mango wood. The group is available in espresso, mahogany and honey finishes.
Classic Flame will show an electric fireplace in rustic styling called the Potomac that features a faux river rock mantle and a slate top. Retailing at $2,199, it is operated by remote control.
Bluefish Home's Primativa collection has three $799-retail cocktails made with Central American hardwoods. Each is hand-distressed and hand-planed by Honduran craftsmen, giving the pieces a rustic look suitable in both urban and casual settings.
Asian Art Imports is offering a "rustic contemporary line" of furniture that includes $350-retail gear stools, a $1,300 stitch chair made from acacia, and a $1,700 mosaic room divider. Materials used in these and other pieces in the line are mainly recovered tropical hardwoods and other sustainable materials, such as tropical vines and driftwoods.
"We are continuing in our efforts to push the parameters of what can be done with recovered and sustainable woods," said company owner Wally Stryk. "There is no compromise in the aesthetic appeal of what we carry. It just happens to be eco-friendly. The line brings natural elements into the home."
Casual rustic also is featured in three Broyhill collections. Tucson is a four-piece Southwestern style group with pine veneers and solids and a distressed tumbleweed pine finish, while Copper Creek is a six-piece rustic lodge-style group with solid hammered copper tops, twisted metal bases and a weathered copper finish. Sedgemoor is a four-piece casual group with book-matched cherry veneers and a burnished distressed cherry finish.
Broyhill also is offering a 12-piece occasional lineup in its transitional Enchantment whole home collection, as well as 13 other stand-alone occasional groups in contemporary, Asian, transitional and traditional styles.
Contemporary is the focus in Brownstone Furniture's Bancroft and Georgetown collections, which feature clean-lined tables in black cherry and walnut finishes, respectively. Featuring cocktails at $600 retail, Bancroft is made with cherry veneers on mahogany solids, while Georgetown has $800 cocktails made with solid mahogany bases.
Contemporary styles also are on tap at CR-Home, Flexsteel, Ultimate Accents and Butler Specialty, to name a few.
CR-Home is showing nine table groups in its Peters-Revington line. These include the casual contemporary Pacifica Group, with book-matched ash veneer tops and tapered and canted legs, and the casual contemporary Finley Lake in a light brown cherry finish, which includes chairside tables and cabinet tables, and a cocktail on casters.
Butler is showing 11 new items this week including some made with recycled woods, said Dan Sumner, vice president of sales and marketing.
"What we are doing here is testing the reaction to some (recycled wood) products," Sumner said. "It has a green factor to it, and is much more transitional and contemporary in style."
Continuing in the contemporary vein, Butler also has a new zebrawood veneer available in a high-gloss finish. These and other contemporary products are part of the Designer's Edge collection.
"It's a great place to test our more cutting-edge designs," said Sumner.
Buyers with more transitional and traditional tastes will see plenty of occasional offerings from Lexington Home Brands, Pulaski, Aspenhome, Safavieh and Furniture Classics.
Aspenhome's Old World-influenced European Memoirs case goods collection includes six new French country-style occasional pieces, including a Biblioteque console, a cocktail table, a Demitasse side table and a Champagne accent table.
Pulaski is among the companies updating traditional and transitional style frames with trendy new color finishes. The company is offering credenzas, bookcases, wine cabinets, accent desks and tray table pieces in finishes such as red chestnut, antique teal and red rouge.
Philip Reinisch is expanding its ColorTime collection with 30 new pieces of display cabinets, hall organizers and mantle fireplaces retailing from $299 to $799. These are available in five 24-step finishes. Cabinets have reversible back panels, which give the pieces a two-tone effect.
In addition to its accent furniture pieces, Furniture Classics is showcasing dining chairs retailing from $249 to $299, mixing and matching some with various dining tables.
"We are fortunate to have a product mix that works well from coast to coast," said Alex Boyer, vice president of sales and marketing, of the traditional and transitional styles in Furniture Classics' product line. He added that the company also offers a casual indoor/outdoor line marketed under its Two Palms division.
Furniture Classics doesn't have any new items at market here. Because of the limited size of its showroom, it is showing goods that are available for immediate shipping from its Norfolk, Va., and San Diego-area warehouses.
"We are re-committed to rebuilding inventory levels to be able to service dealers," Boyer said. "If we are going to be better than the next guys, we have to be able to deliver through a combination of promotions, stock and service. Then we will be able to go out and win the business."
