Annual Promosedia contest honors young chair designers
By Furniture Today Staff -- Furniture Today, January 27, 2008
Udine, Italy — Have a great idea for a chair?
Promosedia, the annual chair show here, is inviting designers, architects and students under age 40 to enter the Promosedia International Design Competition-Caiazza Memorial Challenge.
Each competitor is limited to a single design of an indoor chair. Designs must be unpublished, original and technically feasible, giving "due attention to ergonomics, function, materials and the requirements for mass production, as well as incorporating a significant use of timber," according to the contest organizers.
Wood is the main construction material used in the Friuli region around Udine, home of many of Italy's chair makers.
Judges will award a prize of 3,500 euros for first place and may cite one or two others for special recognition, awarding up to 500 euros each for expense reimbursement. Prototypes of the winning chairs will be made and shown at the next Promosedia, set for Sept. 13–16 in Udine.
Entries must be submitted by March 31. Information and contest rules are available by e-mailing promosediadesign@caltpr.it, or can be downloaded from www.promosedia.it.
The competition also will include a "by invitation" section coordinated by architect Mario Romanelli, featuring six promising young designers.
