AT THE MARKET — Construction of the fourth World Market Center showroom building, a 1.1 million-square-foot structure known as Building D, is scheduled to begin this fall, WMC officials announced Monday.
Market officials said six floors of the 17-story structure will be devoted to gifts and home textiles, while the first two floors will be set aside for temporary exhibit space.
“World Market Center is already a strong gift marketplace, and by expanding the category into future phases of the complex, we will be able to offer a critical mass of companies,” said Babs Blair, vice president of leasing.
Seven upper floors will be devoted furniture, officials said. Building D is scheduled for completion in 2010, but officials did not announce an opening date.
Plans for Building D have been scaled back somewhat, as WMC officials originally said it would be larger than the 2.1 million-square-foot Building C, which will open at this July’s market.
However, market official said the changes to Building D do not represent a change in their long-range plan to have 12 million square feet of showrooms in eight buildings by 2013.
