NORTHBROOK, Ill. — Crate and Barrel President Barbara Turf will succeed co-founder and CEO Gordon Segal when he retires from day-to-day operations May 1, the retailer announced.
Segal will become chairman of the 160-store Top 100 company and continue as a key advisor.
Turf has spent most of her career partnering with Segal in the leadership of the company.
“With rising consumer interest in well-designed, high-quality products at a great value, Crate and Barrel is well positioned to continue our growth well into the future,” she said.
Gordon and Carole Segal founded the company in Chicago in 1962. Turf succeeded Segal as president in 1996, when he became CEO. Today the company is majority owned by Otto Group and has annual sales of more than $1.4 billion through its stores, catalog and Internet businesses. It plans to open its first international location this year.
“I have relished every moment of the last 45 years,” Segal said. “However, I also recognize that transition and change are key to the growth of any retail business, and I want to give Barbara Turf and other talented members of our executive team their well-deserved opportunity to take Crate and Barrel into the future.”
He called Turf the “perfect choice,” for his successor. She is “truly a retail visionary, and no one understands our business, our merchandise, our associates or our customer better.”
Before becoming president, Turf was the retailer’s executive vice president of merchandising and marketing for many years.
