Today's topic: Health

Old, uncomfortable mattresses take their toll, consumers report
I feel sick or not rested when I sleep on an old or uncomfortable mattress:

Source: The Consumer Sleep Study, commissioned by Sit 'n Sleep and conducted online in October and November of 2009 by Harris Interactive
58% of adults
64% of women
52% of men
69% of adults with larger households (more than five people)

Sit 'n Sleep connects bedding with health

Sit 'n Sleep, the Gardena, Calif.-based bedding specialty retailer, does many things right, which is why it has some of the most productive mattress stores in the country. Last fall, the company made another smart move by commissioning a consumer sleep study. Harris Interactive conducted the survey, interviewing a nationwide sample of 2,392 U.S. adults aged 18 and older. The results were weighted to reflect the composition of the U.S. adult population.

The survey results found that an old, uncomfortable mattress is likely to make many consumers feel sick or not rested. And those are gold-plated results for mattress retailers everywhere, as they give them powerful tools to help close the sale.

Consumers who are wavering on a mattress purchase may change their mind when they see these survey results, which deliver a clear message: Your old bed may be making you feel sick.

The solution to that problem: A new mattress.

Larry Miller, president of Sit 'n Sleep, credits these survey results with changing his business.

“Studies have linked the importance of sleep to overall health, and now we can illuminate how the comfort of a person's mattress is specifically impacting one's well-being,” he said. “It's with this knowledge that we have evolved our business strategy, helping consumers go from buying a new mattress for the sake of their bed to getting a new mattress for the sake of their health.”

Key take-away

Old mattresses can make consumers feel sick. And women, bedding's key consumers, are more likely to make the health-mattress connection.
