Trends to watch in Vegas: Diagnostics, specialty beds
David Perry, Executive editor -- Furniture Today, January 25, 2010
Elsewhere in this issue you will find overviews of the latest and greatest introductions in the mattress industry. Here are some emerging bedding story lines for the Las Vegas Market, based on the overviews in this week's product charts:
Consumer diagnostic systems are gaining ground. Kingsdown, the leader in this area, is introducing a more personalized, interactive diagnostic system, with three display options. Comfort Solutions is offering a comfort assessment technology system for its new Sleep iD beds, while Spring Air International is introducing a Comfort Silhouette Imaging system developed in conjunction with Xsensor, the Canadian pressure-mapping company. Undoubtably, a more scientific way to correlate sleepers' needs with specific beds builds credibility with consumers. It will be interesting to see what these new diagnostic systems offer.
Memory foam remains hot … er, trendy. A number of companies contend that memory foam can sleep hot, and say they are addressing that issue with new designs and materials. Sedona Comfort says its memory foam provides for significantly improved airflow, resulting in a cooler night of sleep. Sleep Studio, traveling down a similar road, says its ViscoFresh beds use an open-cell construction and ventilation to combat the heat issue. Boyd Specialty Sleep says it offers new cooling technologies for its sleep sets.
On the memory foam front in general, producer interest remains high. Anatomic Global is introducing seven-pound density memory foam, while Comfort Solutions offers memory foam in its Sleep iD line, along with other comfort materials. Sealy offers both memory foam and latex in its new Embody by Sealy line, while Tempur-Pedic, the leader in this category, shows its complete Tempur-Cloud line.
And that brings us to this trend: Latex remains on the ascent. Look for lots of latex in Las Vegas. Spring Air International is relaunching the Nature's Rest latex line that was well respected in the marketplace. Englander is using latex in its new Posture Support Plus line, designed for overweight sleepers, while Kluft has a line of latex beds with organic cotton ticking and OMI has a latex core in an updated organic mattress. International Bedding offers latex and memory foam in its redesigned Origins line, while Latex International and Pure LatexBliss continue down the latex path with new sleep accessories and mattresses.
Showcase lines will command attention. The biggest flagship line launch is the new Beautyrest line at Simmons, which has been getting good reviews from dealers who have seen it, company officials said. Also worth checking out: Serta's new Perfect Day Collection, Five Star's new True Luxury Collection and Restonic's new Comfort Care models. And Therapedic's Therawrap line features border-to-border encased coil construction.
And those are just some of the new products being shown.
