Tager brothers buy majority stake in Brown Street

Plan to update, expand company’s case goods line

By Furniture Today Staff -- Furniture Today, February 5, 2008

WHITEFIELD, N.H. – Home furnishings veterans Adam and Kyle Tager have bought majority ownership of domestic case goods producer Brown Street Furniture.

Brown Street Furniture has been manufacturing hardwood case goods in northern New Hampshire for more than 35 years. About half the line is made in solid cherry, said Tager. The rest is a mix of maple, pine and ash.

Bedroom makes up about 65% of sales. In addition, the company produces dining, home entertainment, occasional and home office furniture. While offering construction details such as solid-wood drawer fronts and dovetail joints, Brown Street hits medium and upper-medium price points with queen beds retailing for $999.

Elwin Wright, one of the original owners, had been running the company by himself since his partner and co-owner Baxter Wrightson passed away three years ago. Under the terms of the deal, Wright and the Tagers will each own one-third of the business.

The Tagers will add their touch to the product design, sales and marketing arms of the business, while Wright will manage production. Kyle Tager said the team will review the company’s product styles and see what designs can be added or updated. He plans on adding new photography, sales tools and catalog.

Brown Street Furniture’s products are 100 % American made – one of the attributes that attracted the Tagers to the company.

“Brown Street Furniture has maintained their reputation of quality, American-made products,” said Adam Tager. “We plan to continue building upon that reputation, and just as we have done with Mystic Valley Traders, we will expand the product offerings, breathe new life into existing product lines, and create stronger brand recognition.”

The twin brothers have worked in the home furnishings business for the past 15 years. They are owners of both Belle Maison, a 20,000-square-foot store that specializes in designer furnishings, and Mystic Valley Traders, a manufacturer of luxury top-of-the-bed products and upholstered headboards.
