Consumer confidence falls again
By Furniture Today Staff -- Furniture Today, February 3, 2008
The Conference Board's Consumer Confidence Index, which has been seesawing down from 99.5 since September, fell again in January. The Index now stands at 87.9 (1985=100), down from 90.6 in December.
The Consumer Confidence Survey is based on a representative sample of 5,000 U.S. households, conducted for The Conference Board by TNS. The cutoff date for January's preliminary results was Jan. 21.
Regionally, the biggest drops in confidence came in the West North Central and Pacific states. Consumer confidence improved in the South Atlantic, Mountain, East South Central and West South Central states.
Most important to the furniture industry perhaps is the decline in the percentage of consumers expecting an increase in their income in the next six months: 17.6% in January, compared with 20.2% in December.
