Powell strengthens lineup

By Heath E. Combs -- Furniture Today, February 1, 2010

Powell Co. says it is broadening its array of entertainment and casual dining items this market in response to recent successes in stores.

Karen Knoch, vice president of merchandising, said the company began focusing more on entertainment during the October High Point Market, where it received good response from dealers on five new groups.

Prior to that, introductions in the entertainment category were more often related to collections. But Powell's sales management now sees the category as increasingly important, she said.

“We went full force into the category for this Las Vegas Market, our largest introduction in this category to date, and will have more for (High Point in) April,” Knoch said.

The company is expanding its offerings in media consoles here with 12 new models ranging from 42 inches to 60 inches long, plus three new corner consoles. Styles include casual, rustic, and contemporary in wood, metal, glass and mixed media. Retail price points range from $99 to $299.

Several of the consoles feature three-in-one functionality. Televisions can either sit on the console, be supported by a post and mounting bracket above the console, or be attached to a wall over the console via a mounting bracket.

In casual dining, Powell is adding three collections in standard, gathering and bar height. Seating options include stationary chair and stool, castered chair and stool with swivel. Three kitchen nooks also are new.

In addition, three new dining tables will work with the company's Slip Cover Parsons Chair program. The company added several new slip cover choices in High Point.

Knoch said Powell has had much success in casual dining and is aiming to add more value to the category with features such as casters on chairs, and swivel stools that take up little extra space on showroom floors and give retailers the chance to up-sell.

“In a category where there can be no bottom I think everyone's looking for ways to add value,” she said.
