Gardner White Furniture opposes distracted driving
Retailer backs Oprah Winfrey's initiative
Clint Engel -- Furniture Today, February 8, 2010
WARREN, Mich. — Gardner White Furniture here teamed up Saturday with local television station WXYZ-TV to further Oprah Winfrey's initiative against distracted driving.
The Top 100 company sponsored the station's rebroadcast of "The Oprah Winfrey Show's" "No Phone Zone" episode which, according to a news release, "has helped spark a nationwide movement against distracted driving."
In 2008, distracted driving caused 16% of highway fatalities and over 515,000 accidents, the release said. Nineteen states and the District of Columbia have laws preventing texting while driving and 23 states are considering them. Six states and the District of Columbia ban hand-held cell phones while driving.
Following the rebroadcast, viewers were asked to take Oprah's No-Phone Zone Pledge at Gardner-White Stores, where they could register to win a Big Picture Furniture Package as well as tickets to an Oprah taping in Chicago.
The retailer also is using social media to get local residents to take the pledge.
The Kaleidoscope Partnership's Leslie Carothers, who has been building social networking communities for the retailer on Twitter and Facebook, said the interaction of a television network, a local business leader, and social media communities "is an ideal way to get the word out."
"Parents connected to our communities are now reaching out to their own communities for participation. Distracted driving affects everyone," she added.
