Mattress unit sales up 2.8% in December, says ISPA

But bedding business still declined for full year

David Perry -- Furniture Today, February 12, 2010

ALEXANDRIA, Va. — The mattress industry wrapped up a disappointing sales year on a positive note in December, posting 2.8% unit growth and a 5.9% increase in the dollar value of bedding shipments compared with the same month a year earlier.

Unit sales were up 3.9% in the fourth quarter and dollars were up 7.2%.

However, the industry recorded its second down year in a row, according to preliminary figures issued by the International Sleep Products Assn. ISPA said its Bedding Barometer snapshot of business revealed that bedding unit sales were down 9.9% for the year, with dollars off by 10.2%.

Those figures reflect business done by producers that account for about 45% of total units and about 56% of the total dollar value of bedding shipments, ISPA said.

Final figures for 2009 will not be available for several months.

The preliminary ISPA report for 2009 also revealed that innerspring bedding gained market share in units and dollars, posting declines that were not quite as steep as those recorded by specialty sleep sets.

For the year, innerspring mattress units declined by 8.7%, while specialty mattress units declined by 10.6%. The dollar value of innerspring mattress units was off by 9% for the year, while the dollar value of specialty mattresses declined by 13.8%, according to the preliminary ISPA figures.

However, the fourth-quarter figures showed a dramatic rebound by the specialty sleep segment. In that quarter, innerspring mattress units were up by 4.1%, but specialty mattress units jumped by 19.7%. Similarly, the dollar value of innerspring mattress units rose 2.4% in the fourth quarter, while the dollar value of specialty mattress shipments soared by 20.9%, according to the preliminary ISPA figures.

For the year, the preliminary report said the average unit price of innerspring mattresses was down by 0.3%, while the average unit price of specialty mattresses was down by 3.5%.
