AHFA seeks applications for research, education grants

Foundation to support projects that benefit industry

By Furniture Today Staff -- Furniture Today, February 25, 2008

HIGH POINT — The Furniture Foundation of the American Home Furnishings Alliance is accepting grant applications for education or research programs aimed at improving management, manufacturing and marketing in the residential furniture industry.

March 14 is the deadline to apply. An explanation of the procedures for applying is available by calling (336) 884-5000, or e-mailing acounts@ahfa.us.

The Foundation has funded projects that were designed to:

+ Enhance the industry in the mind of the consumer;

+ Have real and immediate application to the industry as a whole;

+ Increase global competitiveness;

+ Prepare future leaders for the industry.

Grants are not awarded to individuals or government agencies. Those submitting proposals that are selected for further consideration will be asked to make a presentation to the Foundation during the April 7-13 High Point Market.

The Furniture Foundation was established in 1948. Funding from the foundation helped North Carolina State University create the furniture manufacturing and management curriculum, as well as the Furniture Manufacturing and Management Center. The Foundation continues to provide scholarship funds for industrial engineering students at N.C. State who choose to major in furniture manufacturing.

In recent years, the foundation has diversified its support to help fund programs at a variety of institutions. A partnership with Appalachian State University in Boone, N.C., helped fund a new five-year program offering undergraduate degrees in furniture manufacturing. The foundation also has supported the Institute for Furniture Manufacturing and Management at Mississippi State University. In 2007, it helped fund a public forum series at Lenoir-Rhyne College that examined issues relevant to the Hickory, N.C., region.
