Tagers buy majority stake in Brown Street Furniture

By Jeff Linville -- Furniture Today, February 24, 2008

Home furnishings veterans Adam and Kyle Tager have bought majority ownership of domestic case goods producer Brown Street Furniture.

Brown Street has been manufacturing hardwood case goods in northern New Hampshire for more than 35 years. About half the line is solid cherry and the rest is a mix of maple, pine and ash.

Bedroom makes up about 65% of sales. In addition, the company produces dining, home entertainment, occasional and home office furniture. Offering construction details such as solid-wood drawer fronts and dovetail joints, Brown Street hits medium and upper-medium price points with queen beds retailing for $999.

Elwin Wright, one of the original owners, had been running the company by himself since his partner and co-owner Baxter Wrightson died three years ago. Under the terms of the deal, Wright and the Tager brothers will each own one-third of the business.

The twin brothers have worked in home furnishings for 15 years. They also own Belle Maison, a 20,000-square-foot store in Newton, Mass., that specializes in designer furnishings, and Mystic Valley Traders, a manufacturer of luxury top-of-bed products and upholstered headboards.

The Tagers will work in product design, sales and marketing at Brown Street while Wright will manage production. Kyle Tager said the team will review the company's product styles and see what designs can be added or updated. He plans on adding new photography, sales tools and catalog.

Brown Street's products are 100% American-made — one of the attributes that attracted the Tagers to the company.

"Brown Street Furniture has maintained their reputation of quality, American-made products," said Adam Tager. "We plan to continue building upon that reputation, and just as we have done with Mystic Valley Traders, we will expand the product offerings, breathe new life into existing product lines, and create stronger brand recognition."
