Gailyn David Pitt, veteran sales rep
ST. JOHN, New Brunswick — Longtime furniture sales representative Gailyn David Pitt died here Feb. 2 after a long battle with cancer.
For 35 years, Pitt travelled the Atlantic provinces and beyond as a sales rep for furniture resources including Durham Furniture, Buhler, Fornorama, Eztia, Braemor, Distinctive Designs and Koehler.
“To Dave, this was more than just a job — it was a profession,” said Ed Farquharson, vice president of sales for Eztia. “His great rapport with his customers was a testament to his passion for people and sales. He was deeply respected and well liked by all who had the good fortune to meet him.”
Pitt was a life member of the Canadian Professional Sales Assn. Prior to going on the road, he worked for Dominion Stores and then Clearview Home Furnishings, which is now the Leon's Furniture franchise outlet here.
Pitt is survived by his wife, Barbara; five children, three grandchildren, three brothers and two sisters.
Memorial donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society, the New Brunswick Heart and Stroke Foundation, Canadian Diabetes Assn. or MindCare New Brunswick.
John Cater Jr., former owner, J.J. Cater Furniture
WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. — John Cater Jr., former owner of multi-store retailer J.J. Cater Furniture, has died at age 86, the Palm Beach Post reported.
Cater, whose parents Pearl and John Cater Sr. started the company in 1925, joined the business in 1949 and took over as president in 1968 after his father died. John Cater Jr. expanded the company from three to eight stores before selling it and retiring in 2002, according to the Post.
He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Juanita P. Cater, three children and seven grandchildren.
Gifts in his memory may be made to the John J. Cater Jr. Memorial Fund at First Baptist Church of West Palm Beach.
Shannon Ernie Carter, Howard Furniture
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — Shannon Ernie Carter, retired director and vice president of manufacturing of the Starkville, Miss.-based Howard Furniture Division of Arnold Inds., died Jan. 26. He was 92.
He was the production manager for Howard Family Room Furniture, a pioneer in providing wood-frame, loose-cushion upholstered furniture for family rooms after World War II. Carter retired from the upholstery manufacturer in 1976 when the plant was sold to Flexsteel Inds.
Survivors include two daughters and three grandchildren.
