WMC petition seeks lower rents
Larry Thomas -- Furniture Today, February 24, 2008
Las Vegas — A World Market Center exhibitor has sent an e-mail to dozens of other tenants asking them to sign a petition seeking lower rents from building management.
The message, sent by Robert Weiss, president of home accents and accent table source Robert M. Weiss Presents, also asks recipients if they would be willing to help pay for a lawyer to help present their case to WMC officials.
"We are suggesting a petition that would ask show management to work with us to reduce costs of rent, common area changes, drayage, etc., so we can save the Las Vegas Market," the message read, in part.
Contacted by Furniture/Today, Weiss declined to elaborate on his e-mail or discuss the initial response to it.
WMC President Bob Maricich said he first learned of Weiss' complaint after reading a story about his e-mail in the Greensboro (N.C.) News & Record. He said Weiss' experience runs counter to what he heard from other tenants during and after last month's market.
"I have not had a single tenant reach out to me as a result of (the Weiss e-mail)," Maricich said. "Based on my conversations with tenants, it was an incredibly successful market by every measure."
He said he's always willing to work with tenants and discuss ways they can make their market more successful. This could include examining areas such as product display, showroom location, showroom design and marketing efforts, he said.
Weiss' company has a 1,400-square-foot showroom in Building B.
