Mattress industry execs golf to help fight pancreatic cancer

ALPHARETTA, Ga. — Mattress manufacturing, supplier and retail executives were among the more than 120 golfers who gathered here on an early fall day to play a round of golf to support the fight against pancreatic cancer.
Amid the lush surroundings of the Capital City Crabapple Golf Club here, the golfers were sent on their way by Howard Young, an Atlanta businessman and pancreatic cancer survivor who has bounced back from a recurrence of his cancer. The event here, the Howard Young Atlanta Golf Classic, is named in his honor.
It is the kickoff of the fall fund-raising and educational activities sponsored by the Seena Magowitz Foundation, which hosts the Seena Magowitz Golf Classic Dec. 7 at the Arizona Biltmore Resort and Spa in Phoenix.
In his comments at the awards luncheon that followed the morning of golf, Smith noted that Simmons has supported the Seena Magowitz event for years, and said the company is pleased to add its support for the Atlanta event as well.
He said there is progress in the fight against pancreatic cancer, but added that more work remains to be done. "We are committed to helping in the future," Smith said.
Leggett & Platt executive Karl Glassman, a strong supporter of the Seena Magowitz Golf Classic, thanked Simmons for the leadership role it has assumed with its support of the Howard Young Golf Classic, which each year has raised more than $100,000 for TGen's pancreatic cancer research.
In addition to Simmons, other hosts of the event this year included the Seena Magowitz Foundation, John Morley, Tom Vitale and Howard Young, who chairs the TGen Foundation's National Pancreatic Cancer Committee.
Young said he was pleased to get the support from Simmons, which is based in Atlanta. He called that "a significant milestone" for his event.

Simmons’ Beautyrest brand was a sponsor of the Howard Young Golf Classic.
"The fight against pancreatic cancer continues to gain support from key players in the mattress industry," Magowitz said. "It's great to see Simmons lending its support to the fight in its home base of Atlanta. As industry support builds, we can bring greater resources to bear in the crusade to ultimately end the scourge of pancreatic cancer. We believe the momentum generated at the Howard Young Golf Classic will carry over to our event in Phoenix in December, which is poised for a record run."
Pancreatic cancer is the nation's fourth leading cause of cancer-related death, responsible this year for an estimated 45,000 new cases, and more than 38,000 deaths. There is no method of early detection, so pancreatic cancer patients often are not diagnosed until their cancer is in its advanced stages.
