CORONA, Calif. —
Memory foam mattress manufacturer Anatomic Global has named Patrick Johnson executive director of its WorldBed humanitarian initiative, which is producing mattresses for earthquake victims in Haiti.
In the newly created position, Johnson will oversee fundraising efforts to make possible the delivery of 200,000 emergency beds to displaced Haitians. The company estimates that it will cost $7.4 million to produce and deliver that many WorldBeds.
Anatomic Global officials said the company is investing its corporate profits for the first quarter of 2010 to manufacture WorldBeds, enabling the delivery of the first 30,000 beds to Haiti, a process that has already begun.
To date Anatomic Global has been joined in the effort by suppliers FXI Foamex Innovations, Deslee Textiles USA, Royal Packaging and Brookwood Cos., and by Parakletos International, a humanitarian organization.
“The need for beds in Haiti is so great that it requires us to partner beyond our key suppliers,” said Anatomic Global CEO David Farley.
The WorldBed is a cot-sized, three-inch foam mattress that can be quickly sent in volume to areas of need. It was created to provide comfort, increased health and safety, and a more sanitary place to sleep in an effort to speed recovery and aid in healing.
Johnson most recently was CEO of Pro-Dex, a supplier to the medical and scientific research industries, and has worked for more than 25 years in manufacturing and business development.
“Our team is heading to Haiti in the next week to assess the needs on the ground so we can determine how to get the most help to the most people in the shortest amount of time,” Johnson said last week.
WorldBed was launched after Hurricane Katrina hit the Gulf Coast in 2005.
In response to the Haiti earthquake, Farley revisited the WorldBed concept and began operating it as an adjunct business unit of his company.
The effort has a Web site at www.worldbed.org.
