LAS VEGAS —
The Sustainable Furnishings Council and World Market Center have announced plans for the third annual One Good Chair design competition.
This year's theme, “Minimum/Maximum,” challenges designers to create a sustainable furniture piece that also is comfortable.
The focus of the competition is lounge chair and casual seating. The chair must demonstrate good material conservation and optimization of resources, be comfortable and look good.
The competition is open to designers under 30 years old who are available to help build a prototype. Submissions should be original designs that have not been manufactured previously and are not commercially available.
The deadline to register for the competition is May 1 for $30. The deadline for late registration, with a cost of $60, is June 15. Details are at http://onegoodchair.com.
Semifinalists will be announced Aug. 5 and will travel to the Las Vegas Market with expenses covered. Prototypes will be judged by a finalist jury. Winners will be announced on Feb. 11, 2011.
“One of the challenges to the sustainability movement is sacrificing comfort for eco-friendly design,” said Susan Inglis, SFC executive director. “The One Good Chair design competition aims to put designers to the test and create a chair that expresses the best of both worlds — smart design and leisurely delight.”
