Tupelo Market honors Furniture Outlets USA
Joan Gunin -- Furniture Today, March 2, 2008
Tupelo, Miss. — Furniture Outlets USA, a Sioux Falls, S.D.-based retailer that has grown and diversified greatly over its 31 years in business, received the National Buyer Appreciation Award from the Tupelo Furniture Market.
In accepting the award, JR Hinks, the retailer's vice president of merchandising, called the recognition "an unbelievable honor, especially in light of the fact that we started by delivering furniture out of the back of cars."
"We rarely miss a market here," added President Gordy Wallenstein. "Wealways seem to find something to fill a void in our buying mix."
Management of the family-run company includes founder and CEO Bill Hinks Sr.; his son JR; his son-in-law, Wallenstein; and his daughter, Vice President Tami Wallenstein, who is married to Gordy.
In 1977, Bill Hinks Sr. started the company with a warehouse filled with mobile home furniture leftovers. It is now a Top 100 retailer (ranked 65 with total 2006 revenues of $121 million)with 25 stores across the upper Midwest.
Furniture Outlets USA operates stores under various names, including Unclaimed Freight Furniture, South Dakota Furniture Mart and Carpet One. It also opened its first Ashley Furniture HomeStore in 2001 and now operates eight of the stores in Minnesota, two in South Dakota and one in North Dakota.
