ISPA: Bedding sales inch up

By David Perry -- Furniture Today, March 2, 2008

The U.S. mattress industry posted a 1.5% unit sales gain last year and the dollar value of bedding shipments rose 4.4%, according to a preliminary look at last year's performance by the International Sleep Products Assn.

ISPA based the estimate on its sample of 19 producers, which it said represents 60.5% of dollar shipments and 46.4% of unit shipments.

The report reflects yet another strong year for the specialty sleep segment, which dramatically outperformed the innerspring category. For the year, specialty sleep mattresses grew 10.8% in units and 15.9% in dollars, compared with a 0.6% unit gain and a 2% dollar gain for innerspring mattresses, according to the preliminary report.

ISPA said the year ended on a bleak note, with its sample indicating a 7.3% drop in unit shipments in December and a 2.9% decline in dollar value.

Innerspring mattress units declined by 7.5% in December with the dollar value sinking by 7.2%. In contrast, specialty mattress units grew by 7.9% in units and 13.5% in dollars from the same month a year earlier.

For the fourth quarter, according to the ISPA sample, innerspring mattress unit sales declined by 0.7% and dollar value edged up by 0.3%. Specialty mattress sales grew 7.3% in units and 11.8% in dollar value.

ISPA is collecting detailed survey information for its final report on 2007 performance, which is expected to be released in several weeks.

The preliminary look at 2007 indicates that both the innerspring and specialty bedding categories posted gains in their average unit mattress prices for the year. The average unit price for innerspring mattresses stood at $253.10 for the year, a 1.4% increase from 2006, and the average price for specialty sleep mattresses was up 4.6% to $854.75.

Those mattress gains were somewhat offset by a 1.3% decline in the average unit price of foundations, which stood at $96.83 for the year.

For all bedding units — mattresses and foundations — the average unit price for the industry last year was $211.07, a 2.8% increase, according to the report.
