'Big deal' works for Casabella Furniture
By Furniture Today Staff -- Furniture Today, March 2, 2008
Corinth, Miss. — Ryan Casabella, owner of Casabella Furniture, is a believer in what Cosec International's Michael Larson says — adaptation is crucial to survival.
According to Casabella, "you have to make it a big deal if you want it to be a big deal." He did just that with a two-hour sale on a Saturday afternoon in September at his north Mississippi store.
He ran a double-truck ad in the local newspaper, closed early on Friday and papered over the store windows.
The sale was set to start at noon, and he started to get nervous when the parking lot was empty at 11 a.m.
"But I didn't get discouraged. I told my seven salespeople to 'Get ready — they're coming!' and at noon when the guard opened the door the parking lot was full and about 50 people were at the door and another 25 were getting out of their cars. We had 200 people in total," Casabella said. "It was all we could do to wait on the customers and write up tickets.
"At 2 p.m., we couldn't close the doors because we had too many people in the store and coming in. We finally closed the doors at 4:30 p.m. The salespeople loved it because they only worked till 4:30, and we're usually open 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Saturday."
