ISPA leaders huddle with retailers to establish closer relationship
By Furniture Today Staff -- Furniture Today, March 2, 2008
Alexandria, Va. — Leaders of bedding manufacturers and suppliers in the International Sleep Products Assn. met with mattress retailers recently in Naples, Fla., to explore opportunities to work together to expand the market for bedding sales.
ISPA officials said the Mattress Industry Leadership Summit was a significant event in the history of the industry.
"Our goal for this landmark event was to discuss the advantages of establishing a closer working relationship among the major sectors of the mattress industry value chain to expand the total market for mattress sales," said Charlie Eitel, CEO of Simmons and ISPA chairman.
Two major initiatives were discussed, ISPA said:
-
Participants explored the viability of an industry-wide marketing campaign to expand mattress sales, building on the public relations efforts of ISPA's Better Sleep Council.
-
Under the leadership of Perry Davis of Leggett & Platt, participants discussed the formation of a national mattress industry sustainability initiative focusing on reducing the environmental impact of used mattresses. Health issues related to the sale of refurbished mattresses also were discussed.
Dick Doyle, ISPA president and CEO, said the association's board will review ISPA's options at a meeting in March and will "develop a game plan for moving ahead to the benefit of all mattress manufacturers, their suppliers and our valued retailers."
