Polish company plans Va. plant

Danville, Va. — A Polish company will invest $36.3 million to open a manufacturing facility here to make upholstery and mattresses for Swedish retailer Ikea, officials said.
The company, Com.40 Ltd., will open the plant in the former Universal Leaf facility, employing more than 800 people to supply products to Ikea stores in North America, according to a release from Virginia Gov. Timothy M. Kaine's office.
According to a prospectus on file with the Virginia Economic Development Partnership, the facility contains 785,000 square feet.
Several states competed for the company's location. Bogdan Kaczmarek, Com.40's owner and CEO, said Danville, in south central Virginia near the North Carolina border, was the "perfect choice" because of its strategic location and transportation infrastructure, making it convenient to reach Ikea stores on the East Coast and to receive shipments from components suppliers.
Kaczmarek also said the company was pleased with incentives offered by state and local governments. Financial incentives were valued at $2.4 million or more, and the Virginia Department of Business Assistance will help train workers, according to the governor.
