Ashley to help Bakersfield customers get furniture
HomeStore licensee said likely to close store

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. — Ashley Furniture Inds. is stepping in to help consumers get their furniture after the local Ashley Furniture HomeStore licensee failed to meet its commitments, the supplier told a local television station.
KBAK/KBFX Eyewitness News reported that Ashley officials said there is a good chance the store will close after a liquidation sale, and that Ashley will soon be contacting customers about deliveries.
The report suggests Ashley's image has been severely tarnished here, and the station said it has been contacted by 38 angry customers who complained that they paid for furniture months ago but have yet to receive it.
"Due to financial difficulties, the owners of the Ashley Furniture HomeStore in Bakersfield, Calif., have not met their commitments to their customers nor to Ashley Inds.," Ashley told the station in a statement.
An Ashley vice president confirmed the HomeStore licensee is Frank Van Ostrand and said he is working with liquidator SPCI on a store closing or liquidation sale.
The station investigated the store this past summer, too, when its customers were complaining that they did not receive their promised free gas vouchers with furniture purchases.
While Ashley is stepping in to help meet the licensee's commitments, customers were still seething about the continuing delivery delay - now put off until late April.
