Awards gala to honor IHFC’s Miller, retailers Morris and Great Lakes

Event is set for April 8 at High Point Market

By Furniture Today Staff -- Furniture Today, March 5, 2008

HIGH POINT — Midwest retailers Morris Furniture and Great Lakes Home Furnishings, along with retired International Home Furnishings Center CEO Bruce Miller, will receive top honors next month at the 14th Annual Furniture Industry Awards Gala here.

Morris, based in Fairborn, Ohio, and Great Lakes, based in Holland, Mich., are the National Home Furnishings Assn.’s 2008 Retailers of the Year. Miller will be saluted by the International Home Furnishings Representatives Assn. as a Pillar of the Industry.

This year’s gala is set for Tuesday evening, April 8, during the High Point Market.

Morris, with 10 stores in southwestern Ohio and northern Kentucky and a clearance center in Fairborn, is the Retailer of the Year among stores with annual sales of more than $10 million. Owner Larry Klaben will accept the award for his company.

Great Lakes, with three stores in Holland, St. Joseph and Grandville, Mich., took honors in the under-$10 million category. CEO Ken Machiela and President Randy Wassink will accept.

Retailers of the Year are selected for their service to the home furnishings industry, contributions to the communities where they do business, and creative leadership of their companies.

IHFRA honoree Miller ran High Point’s largest showroom building complex for 19 years until his retirement in 2005. He joined what was then the Southern Furniture Market Center in 1986 and reinvigorated what had been a struggling business, helping to remake the High Point Market as an international event and broadening its product mix.

The awards gala will take place in the IHFC’s 11th floor, Green Wing ballroom. Tickets are $75 per person or $560 for a table of eight. For reservations, contact the IHFRA office at (336) 889-3920 or NHFA's Mary Beth Pichon at (336) 801-6146..
