Ellis E. Phillips Jr., manufacturing veteran
PINETOPS, N.C. — Ellis E. Phillips Jr., who worked in his family's furniture manufacturing business for more than 60 years, has died at 91.
Phillips was formerly an owner and sales manager for Cotton Belt, a producer of upholstered furniture and bedding under the names Edgecombe Furniture, Sleepworthy Bedding and Therapedic International. Phillips worked alongside his father, brothers, sons and grandchildren during his years at the Pinetops, N.C.-based business. Phillips, a second lieutenant pilot in the Army Air Corps during World War II, also would fly his own plane to work with sales reps and customers.
He also enjoyed photography and traveling and was involved with his church.
He is survived by two sons, four grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, a brother and a sister. Memorial contributions can be made to Pinetops Presbyterian Church, P.O. Box 112, Pinetops, N.C. 27864.
Davene Ginsburg, co-owner, I.M. David Furniture
LOS ANGELES – Davene Ginsburg, co-owner of manufacturer I.M. David Furniture, has died of cancer.
Ginsburg joined I.M. David after marrying the founder, Irving Ginsburg, in 1974. She was a driving force behind the company's popular Millionaires poker collection, and she was the inspiration for the Davene flexible-back chair.
Ginsburg is survived by her husband, daughter, sister, brother-in-law, two granddaughters, two stepchildren and her nieces and nephews.
