Free furniture tied to Cubs win

SuitePlay latest store to go with sports promotion

ALGONQUIN, Ill. — Another furniture retailer is tying free furniture to a home team sports victory.

SuitePlay, a four-store Chicagoland retailer of home entertainment furniture, games and accessories, will reimburse all purchases made at its stores from March 13 through April 15 if baseball’s Chicago Cubs win the World Series this year.

Kelly Claffey, vice president of marketing for SuitePlay, an official Cubs sponsor, called the promotion a “win-win for everyone.”

“This year marks the 100th anniversary of the Chicago Cubs World Championship win against the Detroit Tigers and all of Chicagoland is hoping that the Cubs will repeat history,” she said.

“We are inviting our shoppers to step up to the plate and buy furniture, games and other accessories to make their home more fun for baseball season during the promotional period. To show our team spirit, we’ll pay them back for their store purchases should the Cubbies go all the way.”

The reimbursement excludes tax and delivery fees. Claffey wouldn’t disclose sales projections for the event, except to say SuitePlay anticipates the promotion, combined with the introduction on an outdoor living collection, will more than double business during the period.

The promotion is fully insured, she said.

A media blitz begins Thursday and includes TV spots on Comcast SportsNet and radio spots on WGN and other local stations, as well as ads in the Chicago Tribune, e-mail blasts and Web site promotions. The promotion also will be announced at Cubs games and will get play on the team’s downtown marquee. Customers during the event will receive a free t-shirt co-branded with the Cubs and SuitePlay.
