Co-founders Jim Hering, Ron Werner lead Colorado store

ROSEVILLE, Calif. — The Western Home Furnishings Assn. has named Boulder, Colo.-based HW Home its 2010 Western Retailer of the Year.

The WHFA said its highest honor goes to a home furnishings retailer that "exemplifies exceptional store design, innovative advertising and brand marketing, unwavering commitment to community and the environment, outstanding operations and a continuing dedication to the home furnishings industry."

HW Home and co-founders Jim Hering and Ron Werner will be honored May 4 at a dinner celebration and awards presentation at Disney's California Adventure Park, Hollywood Picture Backlot in Anaheim, Calif., the finale to this year's WHFA Conference and Expo.

The high-end urban eclectic HW Home got its start in 1999, a year after Hering and Werner visited Werner's sister in Boulder to design the interior of her new home. They "immediately saw an opportunity to bring fashion-forward designs and styles to the area," according to a press release, and soon opened HW Home.

The business outgrew its first location within a year. Today, it has four Colorado stores in Boulder, Denver, Broomfield and Greenwood Village, and an e-commerce business with about 40 employees.

The stores also are open to consumers' pets, and Hering's and Werner's love for animals also has made them active with Humane Society of Boulder Valley. HW Home also sponsors other community and charitable organizations in the area.

In a joint statement, Werner and Hering said, "We're incredibly humbled, elated and kind of blown away to be named Retailer of the Year.

"To be honest we thought our business was a little small since we knew we were up against larger companies that are really great, successful, beautiful furniture retailers with great industry experience. We weren't counting on anything and we were just so excited to find out that we were nominated back in the fall. We are very honored and thrilled to be the recipient of this prestigious award."

WHFA Executive Director Sharron Bradley said the association is proud to honor HW Home, adding, "With their dedication to detail and customer satisfaction, HW Home exemplifies everything an exceptional retailer strives to be."
