Fabrics key for upholstery

High Point — While premarket activity was underwhelming, fabric upholstery companies like Kincaid still put on a good show to give retailers something to chew on.
"We are being aggressive and showing a lot of fabrics," said Steve Beeker, vice president of upholstery sales and marketing for the La-Z-Boy unit. "We want to put our best foot forward and show retailers confidence. Even if some introductions don't make it, we have to give them a reason to buy."
Kincaid "dolled up" its showroom, Beeker said, with eight-way, hand-tied Qualux 2.4 density foam cushioning, mixed with blend-down feathers. "When you buy a Qualux cushion, you get a nice heavy all feather down (accent) pillow," Beeker said.
As for colorations, Kincaid played up basic plaids and such colors as green to take the category "out of a sea of beige," he said.
Robinson & Robinson's SofaTrend fabric upholstery division also emphasized soft greens and plush pillows, as did Craftmaster with brown in combination with blue, as well as more yellowy greens and lots of red.
"From a fabric standpoint, there is still time to make changes," said Roy Calcagne, president of Craftmaster, which has merged its Universal imported upholstery line into Craftmaster.
Modular styling, mixed with colorful pillow accents, proved a popular trend at Carter Furniture, said Carol Angus, vice president of sales and marketing.
