LMG offers efficiency program for bed makers
Goals: Reducing waste, boosting profit

St. Charles, Ill. — A new manufacturing efficiency program offered by Lilly Management Group is designed to help mattress producers "find money on their factory floors," the company says.
LMG officials say the new program is timely as the industry moves into what is expected to be another challenging year.
"Delivering increased efficiency, reduced waste and new profits through skillful evaluation and guidance is especially valuable today not only for the long-term benefits to manufacturers in any economy, but also during tough business times when every advantage counts," said LMG partner Ed Lilly.
LMG, based here, said its new Factory Solutions program is aimed at increasing productivity and reducing waste in four key mattress factory operations: Quilting, factory layout, floor operations and materials evaluation. The savings realized could add up to thousands of dollars a year, according to the company.
The new program draws on the decades of mattress operations experience of LMG's principals to help producers boost plant efficiencies, drive productivity and realize substantial savings.
"Any time a factory operates at improved efficiency levels, the benefits quickly become obvious on the bottom line," said Bob Sabalaskey, LMG vice president of manufacturing and product engineering. "This program is dedicated to uncovering the hidden profits that exist in nearly every factory, and to providing the platform on which a mattress operation can benefit from its own improved efficiencies year after year."
Sabalaskey will present an overview of the program during the International Sleep Products Assn. Expo in Baltimore this week.
Producers can select an area or areas of concentration from among the four options. LMG will visit the factory for a day to discuss a specific operation or problem, and to review opportunities and options.
Manufacturers who choose to begin an efficiency program after the initial consultation will receive an on-site review of their targeted operations, processes or methods.
They also will receive a report that includes analysis and efficiency recommendations. In addition, the program provides employee training, if needed.
The quilting evaluation includes a review of quilt sub-assemblies and patterns, SKUs, machine utilization and materials handling.
The factory layout evaluation covers product flow, materials handling and waste reduction.
Floor operations evaluations can involve multiple processes, including line load, mattress build, tape edge, flanging, border sew and capping.
Materials evaluation can include reviews of incoming raw materials, work stations, component costs and SKU efficiencies.
