Bedrooms draw praise for details, storage
By Thomas Russell -- Furniture Today, March 15, 2010
HIGH POINT — Buyers who visited the February Las Vegas Market had plenty of bedroom resources to shop. There also were plenty of styles, ranging from rustic to European traditional, to suit a multitude of tastes.
Shown here are several of the new transitional styles — a mix of Las Vegas introductions and first-time Vegas showings of October High Point introductions — that resonated with retailers. These clean-lined approaches feature some embellishments such as bamboo-shaped posts and framed panels as well as functional features such as storage footboards and siderails.
Product: Bella Vista from Riverside Home Furnishings, introduced at the October High Point Market.
Key features: The transitionally styled Bella Vista is made with cherry veneers and hardwood solids and comes in a cherry finish. Case pieces have full-extension, ball-bearing drawer guides, and bottom drawers and storage footboard drawers have cedar bottoms. All other drawers have felt-lined bottoms. A four-piece group, including a bed, dresser, mirror and chest, retails for about $1,799.
What dealers liked: Dealers commented on the quality of the finish, which had a slightly higher sheen than other recently introduced items. Dealers also liked the variety of pieces available in the group, including beds with storage headboard or footboard.
Product: Tropics from New Classic Home Furnishings, introduced at the September 2009 Las Vegas Market. Improvements made to February re-introduction include improved glides and a refined finish.
Key features: Tropics, an island-influenced transitional collection, is made with Asian hardwood solids and hardwood veneers and comes in a tobacco finish. The group has decorative elements such as bamboo-shaped posts and woven cane accents. A four-piece group retails from $1,699 to $1,899.
What dealers liked: Dealers liked the design and scale of the group, including its diamond- shaped veneer pattern on drawer fronts and the tropical accents. They also liked the depth of drawers and other features such as the full-extension drawer glides.
Product: Richmond from Aspenhome, introduced at the February Las Vegas Market.
Key features: The traditionally styled Richmond features cherry and birch veneers over poplar solids with a cherry finish. The group has a number of the bells and whistles that Aspenhome customers have come to appreciate and expect. These include nightlights in the nightstand, a removable jewelry tray in the dresser, full-extension drawer guides and deep cedar-lined bottom drawers. A king bed, dresser, mirror and nightstand retails for $1,999.
What dealers liked: Dealers responded well to Richmond's soft traditional styling and the dark cherry finish. Dealers also liked the updated nature of the sleigh bed, which is seen here with an optional low-profile storage footboard, meeting the consumers' expectations for additional master bedroom storage.
Product: Pacific bedroom from Whittier Wood Products, introduced at the September 2009 Las Vegas Market and expanded with a new finish at the February Vegas market.
Key features: The transitionally styled Pacific is made with alder solids and is shown here in a caffe finish, which is a dark chocolate/mocha color. The group also is available in a glazed spice finish. A storage bed, two nightstands, a dresser and a mirror retails for $2,999.
What dealers liked: Details such as the reeded headboard and the large drawers on the side panels of a storage bed were a hit with those dealers who had not seen the group before February. They also liked the dovetail construction on drawers and the full-extension, ball-bearing drawer guides.
