Barbara Goldstein's job cut at GNYHFA
Position eliminated to reduce costs
Clint Engel -- Furniture Today, March 25, 2010
NEW YORK — Barbara Goldstein, longtime executive director of the Greater New York Home Furnishings Assn., was let go from the industry group looking to cut costs by eliminating its one paid position.
Goldstein, who led the group of home furnishings representatives, retailers and service providers for 15 years, said she had "become a casualty of the economic bullet" with her dismissal Tuesday.
"I want to thank all of you for the support that you have shown me and the association and hope that you will continue to show the same support to the association that has been there for you in good and bad times," she said in an e-mail.
Chris De Lisa, a sales executive with Home Line Inds. and current president of the association, said the 44-member group, like others in this industry, needs to cut back during tough times.
While it will continue to hold special events, De Lisa said GNYHFA will "get a little leaner," with directors and other members stepping up to take more responsibilities.
A letter to members from GNYHFA's executive board said, "The board of directors wishes to thank Barbara Goldstein for her years of service and single-minded dedication to the association and the greater New York home furnishing community. She will be missed."
It said GNYHFA will maintain current services to members - including health insurance and car rental and hotel discounts - and service the industry "with help from a temporary part-time director and volunteer members."
Goldstein added that while her future is uncertain, "It would be my desire to stay in the industry for which my expertise, my passion, and the commitment that I have shown for the past 15 years would continue."
