By Furniture Today Staff -- Furniture Today, March 25, 2008

Environment Furniture opens retail showroom

NEW YORK – In early March, Environment Furniture announced the opening of a retail showroom in the Flatiron District and Union Square area here. The 4,000-square-foot showroom with a loft-like design is the company’s first freestanding retail outlet on the East Coast.

EFI is committed to using sustainable materials and responsible processes to create aesthetically sophisticated designs with a true organic quality, a press release said. The materials used in EFI’s collections are either reclaimed or responsibly harvested, the company said. The store offers sofas, lighting, bedding and rugs  among other items.

Baetge opens SC41 Furniture retail store

SOQUEL, Calif. – California Futons owner Michael Baetge opened a new eco-retail venture called SC41 Furniture here about four weeks ago. The store has close to 7,000 square feet dedicated to green furniture and bedding items.

It includes product from companies such Maria Yee, Zola Furnishings, Pacific Rim, Ramblin’ Wood and Urban Woods furniture, as well as Forest Stewardship Council certified products.

A message on the company’s Web site states: “Our goal is to offer our customers high quality, simply styled furniture and bedding at the lowest prices possible while maintaining our commitment to the environment and using natural, eco-friendly and recycled materials whenever possible.”

JCPenney enlists Seo for Simply Green mark

PLANO, TX – Department store JCPenney has partnered with eco-lifestyle expert Danny Seo for a Simply Green designation to assist customers making environmentally conscious purchases.

Beginning this month, a wide range of private brand merchandise – from apparel to home accessories – will bear the Simply Green mark, which highlights for customers merchandise that lessens the impact on the environment.

The merchandise must fall into one of the following three categories: Organic, Renewable or Recycled. The merchandise will be highlighted in Simply Green “zones” throughout the store. The mark will be found on existing products and on new products that have launched for the 2008 spring season.

Seo is the headline speaker at Furniture/Today’s third Bedding Conference, set for May 14-16 at the Ritz-Carlton golf resort in Naples, Fla. JCPenney operates 1,074 department stores throughout the United States and Puerto Rico.
