Furniture Warehouse named Florida's top retailer

SARASOTA, Fla. —
Mark Richmond of The Furniture Warehouse has been named the 2010 Distinguished Retailer of the Year by the Florida Home Furnishings Representatives Assn.
Since opening in 1985, the retailer has grown to four locations in Sarasota, where the company is based, and in Bradenton, Venice and Port Charlotte, Fla.
FHFRA members will honor Richmond at an industry event this year at a date and location to be announced later.
The award salutes a retailer for outstanding contributions to the furniture industry through creative skills, management expertise, hard work and loyalty. It is given only when the association believes a retailer has significantly enhanced or influenced the furniture industry, and has been presented 10 times since 1981.
“Mark Richmond changed his business model so his business could excel through the downturn in the economy,” said Eddie Gonzalez, FHFRA president.
Richmond said the company was proud to receive the award. He said that during the downturn, the retailer has focused even more on its mission of bringing consumers the best values at promotional price points.
“As the recession took hold, people started buying down more than ever,” he said. Furniture Warehouse found more opportunities for special deals, closeouts and containers from manufacturers and importers anxious to sell goods, he added. In addition, as the economy softened, the company spent more on advertising.
As a result, its business was up in its last fiscal year, ending in July, and continued to grow in the first half of the current year, Richmond said.
The retailer also partners with Habitat for Humanity and local food banks through its Furniture Warehouse Community Outreach Program.
