AICO's Vizcaya takes inspiration from Spain

By Ray Allegrezza -- Furniture Today, April 6, 2008

In keeping with a history of bringing retailers designs from around the world, AICO this week is introducing the Vizcaya collection of case goods and upholstery, said to capture the opulent styling of upscale furniture from Spain and the northwestern Mediterranean.

President Larry Rinaldi said the collection's bedroom and dining room furniture is offered in a warm Dusted Umber finish on ash solids and ash, oak, and pecan veneers. The wood pieces complement the rich fabrics and hand-rubbed vintage leathers of the upholstery offerings, he said.

The Vizcaya bedroom includes a poster bed with wood hand carvings, and topped with metal finials. A second bed option features a low footboard that offers a platform effect, while retaining the elegance of the poster bed.

A gentleman's chest and armoire in the bedroom group also feature hand carvings. Both pieces offer ample storage, double-hinged doors that allow for full views of interior components, and a drawer designed to hold a DVD player.

Matching bedside chests include a hidden drink tray and a hidden velvet-lined drawer on the bottom. The chests also include a two-plug outlet in the top drawer with room for a cord.

A seven-piece bedroom collection is priced from $6,500 to $7,500 retail, Rinaldi said.

The dining room ensemble includes a stately eight-leg rectangular table that extends to 166 inches to easily seat 14 people. Hand-carved lion heads offer points of interest on each of the high back wood chairs. The table and six chairs will retail for about $6,000.

The collection's china buffet and curio feature large medallion pulls and a carved wooden twisted rope outline. Both pieces include a lighted bottom portion, and have beveled, seeded glass for a vintage look, as well as ample storage including a velvet-lined silverware caddy.

The matching bunching wall provides versatility with its ability to stand alone with one piece, or bunch together with all pieces.

The twisted rope motif also is evident on upholstery show wood pieces. The sofa and matching loveseat feature button-tufted backs and arms, antique-finish brass nailheads, and deep seating. Other upholstery pieces include a club chair and an armless chaise, with dramatic style elements, including scroll detail nailheads and antiqued iron scroll legs.

Another new addition to the showroom this year is the Toledo upholstered sectional, created to complement AICO's other case good collections. The sectional includes a sofa section, chaise section, armless chair for extending the length, and pie wedge to create a curving shape.

Rinaldi indicated that retail pricing, depending upon configuration, will range in price from $800 to $2,000.

As assortment of top-of-bed options also are available to complement AICO's bedroom suites. A king-size set, which consists of 13 pieces including comforter, duvet, shams, Euro-pillows and highly decorated accent pillows, will typically retail for less than $999, Rinaldi said.

Complementing AICO's offerings is its line of decorative accent rugs. Available in a wide variety of styles, shapes and materials, the rugs' retails range from $399 to $2,000.
